Desciption

United Earth burns. The Swarm runs rampant across our space. We mourn the loss of thousands of ships and millions of fallen comrades. Billions of fathers, mothers, sisters, and brothers - all gone, all dead. It is time we end this, for our moment has come. But victory never comes without sacrifice. Heroes are not taught nor trained but forged in blood and ashes. Our grandchildren's history books will tell our story and glorify the heroes and legends. The Swarm will be conquered; we will prevail. At any price. Read more

Review

Victory is the 3rd and final part in the Legacy Fleet series and sees Humanity now facing the Swarm and the Russian Alliance. The Dolmasi have left the Swarm, and have become tentative allies of Granger and United Earth. However, the Swarm have decided to destroy humanity, changing tactics and smashing planets, crushing everything in their path. They have a new weapon, a Super-Dreadnaught as well.In this final part of the series, Webb brings it all together, into a climatic, gripping and nerve wracking book that you will not be able to put down. This book starts at the Indira system, with an incredible battle and just does not let up, racing from one amazing scene to the next as Granger, Shelby and the Crew of the Constitution/Warrior try desperately to save Humanity and ultimately the galaxy from an enemy that is so powerful they may just be unstoppable.Nick Webb is a brilliant author using his outstanding writing skills as well as his scientific knowledge to craft a story that is both action packed, but at the same time intelligent and engaging. One of the things I like most about Webb’s work, is that there is a good degree of impressive technology, explained in a way that makes it easy to understand and enjoyable. There is some amazing (and believable) technology in this series that seriously blows the mind in the way it is engaged. The singularity technology that has been employed in this story is captivating, inventive, and so cleverly written, and only Webb is capable of doing this so well, of making it so easy for the reader to understand.Webb also writes some fantastic characters. His characters manage to capture all the flaws that you would expect to see in real life people, as well as the sheer determination that drives the exceptional few to succeed at their endeavours. Granger continues to be outstanding as the cantankerous old Captain that you just can’t help but admire and support in his epic struggle to save the Galaxy from the Swarm. Proctor is equally brilliant as his second in command, stoic, intelligent, rational and yet, she is his moral and emotional compass when he starts to drift. Webb does an incredible job with these two characters and their relationship, from the very beginning were they couldn’t stand each other, through to this book, were, although there is no romance, they have such a deep respect for each other, and care for each other so much, having been through so much, there is a bond between the two stronger than most romances. It takes a clever author to be able to generate this type of emotive feeling in the reader, this type of understanding, without explicitly stating it.There are the multitude of other impressive characters as well, from the rather enthralling and expertly crafted Political arena with Avery, Isaacson, Malekov, Volodin and many others, to the Space Combat Arena and the fighter pilots and ‘Fishtail’, ‘Ballsy’ and funniest of all, ‘Pew Pew’ and ‘Fodder’.This does not even cover the Aliens, the bridge crew or people like Admiral Zingano. Webb has created a spectacular array of characters to weave his incredible tale together. This is set amongst a very realistic back drop of our own universe. And who better to describe it, than a guy who works at NASA? Webb does a beautiful job of describing each of his worlds, the areas in between, giving you the feel that you are there. This is an amazing book, and an amazing series, one of the best in the Space Opera series I have read, and I think it is more than worth the read.Webb is a gifted writer, incredibly talented, using his scientific talents to create exceptional works of the imagination.
