"The Best American Magazine Writing 2022" is the latest in this series, edited by Sid Holt for the American Society of Magazine Editors and published by Columbia University Press. Every year, the press publishes a collection of the most noteworthy essays and articles published in the US over the year. It features publications from print magazines and online venues, with traditional heavy hitters such as the Atlantic and Harpers side-by-side with ESPN and Buzzfeed news.The breadth of topics range from personal essays to ground-breaking science. Yet despite this variety, there is a sense of American zeitgeist, as common threads of media headlines, US politics and the COVID pandemic, run through the collection. I found myself excited and intrigued by space telescopes, the fall of Kabul, vaqueros, Britney Spears and even boxing. While the big names such as Ann Patchett and Kareem Abdul Jabber deliver impressive work, it was the essays by new-to-me authors such as Carina del Valle Schorske and Katie Gutierrez that really surprised and captivated me.I highly recommend "The Best American Magazine Writing 2022" for readers who appreciate excellent writing and quality journalism.
